“My first experience here at Enable Madison County has been inspiring. It is my first time working in a non-profit organization where I’m serving the elderly and home bound. Before beginning my internship I had no idea what to expect and everything I thought Enable Madison County would be is not. Many of the clients I have spoken to live alone, suffer from depression and have lost a significant amount of independence.
Enable Madison County impacts individuals living with challenging life circumstances by providing services that make them feel good about themselves by giving them a little piece of independence back. Instead of providing services and checking clients off a list, Enable Madison County’s clients are lifelong. Clients will always be able to reach out for additional assistance throughout the years or just to simply call and catch up.
In my first week here, I’ve realized how important a simple phone call and asking how someone is doing can really reassure clients their life is meaningful. Wheelchair ramps and grab bars are not just necessities for mobility, it’s also a tool that is beneficial to improve an individual’s emotional well being. Although these installations may seem small to others, it’s really something that provides happiness to those who need it. So, far that is the biggest takeaway from my experience here at Enable Madison County; that it’s the things we often mistake as small that are the ones that make a big impact on someone’s life.”
